Hidden cameras:  Before you buy.  Author: Adam C Sisterhen

Why are Hidden cameras becoming main stream?

·            Since the inception of Hidden cameras, they have come a long way. Hidden cameras use to be for Business, movie makers, and the Elite. Now with new technology and manufacturing the costs have not only become affordable they have become easy to use and go completely unnoticed in your home or business.

·            There are hidden cameras of every shape, size and kind on the market today from network cameras to teddy bear cameras and everything in between.

 ·            Hidden cameras are easy to use and readily available.

·            Abuse is a real factor in America, driving people to make sure their children and or parents are being cared for properly.  The hidden camera is perfect for keeping tabs on the care givers.

Which type of Hidden camera best suites my needs?

·            How do you plan to watch your video? If you plan to watch it on the Internet the cameras is the same you just need to make sure to purchase the proper software for your computer to stream it live. If that isn't a concern you can use a DVR system that records it to watch at a later time.

 ·            Wireless or wired? Wireless cameras are really great because you can place them anywhere. Most wireless cameras come equipped with a receiver that sets by your computer or DVR device. Where as a wired cameras would have to place in an area that the cables are hidden running to your recording device or computer to maintain the integrity of what your trying to accomplish; finding out what is going on at your house or place of business.

 ·            Lighting conditions. Are the times you need to be informed during good lighting or not? If you're not sure, they have x-vision cameras which work great both with and without good lighting. X-vision cameras are black and white recording only, which is usually suitable for most needs. Color cameras are available if that is necessary they just don't work as well in low light conditions if at all.

 ·            There are hidden cameras that will fit any office or home and be completely undetected. For example the radio alarm clock hidden camera is perfect for night stands; in fact the alarm and radio really work. A child's room with lots of stuffed animals a bear cam would not stand out, or an air freshener, wall clock, plant, tissue box, etc. There are almost endless amount of different types. Search around and find which one fits best for your home or office.

Do I need a DVR system or not?

·            That depends if you want to record long periods of time or not. If you are using a hidden camera at your place of business one that records long periods can help catch any crime that might be taking place when your away from the office or closed for the day or weekend.

 ·            If you are only targeting certain times of the day your computer might have the capacity to handle to recording times you need. Most home owners check out what is going on regular basis as to not need long durations.

 ·            If you are using them to watch your house when you're on vacation and might not have access to the Internet a DVR system would be a good fit. If you do have the Internet and can frequently check on your house and make the necessary calls if something is going on then the computer would be the right fit.

 ·            Computers have come a long way and yours might have a huge hard drive that will enable you to record all you need. That is something you will need to find out before you buy your system.

What are some Advantages of hidden cameras?

·            I guess the most obvious, is they are hidden, no one alters their behavior because they are being watched, giving you the opportunity to see them as they are.

·            Personal security; you know what is going on, giving you comfort and personal security.

·            Hidden cameras give you the upper hand when dealing with he said she said situations with care givers or whoever might be working on or in your home or business.

·            If the need should arise your footage is allowed as evidence in the court of Law.

What are some disadvantages of hidden cameras?

·            Hidden cameras are just that hidden, so they don't deter persons from committing crimes or atrocities that the visible surveillance camera might.

·            There is some controversy with hidden cameras. Some people view them as an invasion of personal privacy and that isn't without merit. Due to the nature of the camera being hidden persons using them could be doing so in an inappropriate manner. Currently hidden cameras are legal in all States. However voice recording depends on your area and you can never record the voice with video under any circumstance.

·            Wireless hidden camera signals can be intercepted by someone with the proper equipment, which could then be used against you by monitoring your house or business for opportunities to commit a crime or an atrocity.

In conclusion, I believe hidden cameras, if handled responsible are a wonderful tool for providing personal security and comfort. Remember the best time to learn your lesson about personal security and self defense is before something happens. Pepper Spray, Mace, Stuns Guns & TASERS. Personal Security Protection Devices & Self Defense Tips

www.yourpersonalsecuritystore.com

How Do You Choose The Proper Personal Security Product For You? Author: Adam C Sisterhen

There are a lot of great personal security products on the market today for self defense, like Tasers, Stun guns, Pepper spray, and Personal alarms. How do you choose which is best for you? That is definitely were most people have trouble choosing the proper product for them. Here are some questions to ask yourself that will help you make that decision.

When do you feel you need protection? In today's environment, protection is becoming more of a necessity than an option. While jogging, at home, walking to your car? While jogging: There are pepper sprays made specifically for that task. At home any of the personal security products would be great; of course they are no substitute for a home alarm or security system. Walking to your car any of these could work depending on your situation. Any situation that places a person at risk due to location, or being alone in areas that are unfamiliar are key things to be aware of. Unfortunately, one never knows where business or events will lead throughout the day. 100% preparedness is paramount.

Are you usually walking alone to your car? A personal alarm might not help if no is there to hear it and it doesn't scare off your attacker. However a stun gun, Taser or pepper spray is always a good beat. They will disable your attacker letting you get away. Parking garages, distance parking, even at retail outlets are locations criminals can overcome people who may be alone. Within seconds, criminals can time an opportunity that could leave a person helpless and vulnerable. The bad guys watch, and are aware of their surroundings. Do you?

Do you travel alone? When traveling alone a Taser, stun gun or pepper sprays are always good choices. I would recommend a combination of either a Taser or Stun gun coupled with a personal alarm and pepper spray key chain. Always check with your travel agency or airlines for the proper protection authorized to carry. However, travel in a car over distance must calculate for breakdowns, unexpected stops, even routine fill ups could present a situation that could drastically change in seconds!

Are you looking for something to raise a lot attention? If that is what you're looking for, a personal alarm is perfect choice. They admit a high decibel tone usually available from 80db to 130 db. You will diffidently grab people's attention, or scare off your attacker. Attention can also be obtained by door alarms at hotels or your house. Most attackers are run off due to loud noises and alarms that sound unexpectedly. Whistles, car alarms, house alarms, lights and breaking glass create attention - something criminals don't need.

How close are you willing to get to the attacker? Of course that is if you see them coming. If you don't want to get close to them perhaps a Taser or Pepper spray is your choice. They both let you keep your distance. Being aware of your surroundings is important. Those people approaching from the front can be watched by making good eye contact, hand movements, and step patterns. Being aware of who may be approaching from the rear through the sound of footsteps, frequency of the approaching steps, shadow movements, and unusual noises could be used to deter an attack by changing you pattern of travel. Are you physically capable to handle a Taser or Stun gun? If not pepper spray or personal alarms would be the way to go. As with any form of defense, hand tactics or personal defense tool, practice is imperative! Knowing how to use the tool, or evasive technique is critical to defend against a would-be attacker. As with handling weapons, the use of a personal defense tool should be second nature and not be a surprise to the user. Practice, practice, practice many and a variety of situations to know how you might react and to be able to use the weapon of defense properly.

What is your budget? I know that doesn't seem like a viable question when no one can put a price on personal safety, but it is. Tasers can be expensive where as pepper spray, personal alarms and some stun guns are inexpensive. Buy the best device that you can afford for the situations you find yourself most vulnerable to defend. Once you make that significant purchase, be sure to know how to use it properly and effectively.

In summary; the best weapon is the one you don't have to use! First of all, avoid situations that will jeopardize your safety. Secondly, if you have to use a defense weapon, know how to use it effectively. The response "I should have practiced more" is often too late at a great expense. Remember the best time to learn your lesson about personal security and safety is before something happens. Pepper Spray Products, Self Defense Pepper Spray Key Chains & Police Home Units. Pepper Spray FAQs

www.yourpersonalsecuritystore.com

Pepper spray frequently asked questions. Author: Adam C Sisterhen

What is Pepper Spray?

·         Pepper spray is a non-lethal non-toxic aerosol spray used for self defense. The active ingredient in pepper spray is a naturally occurring substance called Oleoresin Capsicum or “OC”.  OC is an extracted resign produced from below the stem of cayenne peppers. OC is the ingredient that causes the results pepper spray is known for. They take the OC concentrate, mix it with an inert gas for dispensing purposes and inject that into the dispensing canister.

How is pepper spray rated?

·         Pepper spray is rated in SHO (scoville heat units) or percent of SHO. For example if a unit is rated 10% of a 2 million pepper it should have a 200,000 out of nozzle scoville heat units. 10% of a 3 million pepper it should have a 300,000 out of nozzle heat units. Don’t be fooled, a lot of brands use high numbers on their labels to get you to buy; however the heat units and percentages they state don’t come out in true in independent laboratory testing. Heat wave pepper spray units are the best on the market, there stated units and percents actually test true.

How is pepper spray dispersed?

·         The public can purchase pepper spray with three different types of dispersal methods; foam, fogger, and stream.

·         Foam: Foam unit’s spray out a shaving cream like consistence foam, in a wide angle cone. The heavy weight makes blow back less likely than the fogger unit. It is rumored that the foam can wipe it off and keep coming; that is completely false, the affects are immediate.

·          Fogger: Fogger units spray a fine mist of particulates over a wide area making it easier to hit multiple assailants (the impact on multiple assailants won’t be as affective); however it doesn’t have the distance of foam or stream, and blow back can be an issue.

·         Stream: Stream units shoot straight out like a water gun giving you the most distance of the sprays and the most concentrated solution upon impact. When using the stream unit you should spray a fan pattern to assure accuracy. Stream units are the best units to avoid blow back.

What are the physical effects of pepper spray?

·         Pepper spray is an inflammatory agent with three physical effects that may be experienced. The first effect is experienced with the eyes; the eye capillaries dilate causing instant temporary blindness, involuntary tear production, and a strong burning sensation. Impaired vision may also cause the body’s equilibrium to be off creating balance issues. The main effect takes several minutes to diffuse, with some effects lasting considerable longer depending on the action taken.

·         The second effect affects the respiratory system causing the throats lining to swell restricting oxygen flow to low levels, taking the ability to fight or sustain physical force away. Other symptoms include gasping for air, paralysis of the larynx, coughing uncontrollably, and gag reflex.

·         The third effect attacks the integumentary system, specifically the epidermis layer or outer layer of skin. It causes and intense burning sensation and rash. The duration of irritation and rash depends on each individual’s skin sensitivity.

How do you wash off pepper spray?

·         First, remove any contaminated clothing, so you don’t recontamination yourself after washing. Wash your hands repeatedly to decontaminate them. About 8 times. After your hands are decontaminated use a vinegar and baking soda mixture (oil free soap and water if you don’t have vinegar and baking soda) to gently pat the other affected areas. Rubbing, using lotions or oil based soaps cause the OC particles to move deeper into the skin prolonging the discomfort. However there is no real affective way to remove pepper spray besides time.

In summary, using a self defense pepper spray is a great light weight easy to carry way to protect you and loved ones. Check the expiration of your spray and keep up to date, use the out of date one for practice. As with any personal security product you need to practice with it. Personal property crime prevention outside the Home: Author: Adam C Sisterhen

·         Never leave indications that you are not home. For example never leave your trash cans or recycle bins curb side after being emptied, never leave notes indicating no one is home. An unoccupied home is one of the first things burglars or would be criminals will look for.

·         Keep all outside sheds, storages, gates or entries to your property closed and pad locked with high quality locks.  This takes away the easy target. Anything that will slow them down makes them look elsewhere.

 ·         Store all outdoor valuables such as grills, patio furniture, and lawn equipment in sheds or locked to permanent fixtures like posts or trees

. Remember out of sight out of mind.

·         Plant shrubs or bushes with thorns or other abrasive foliage near windows to detour entry at those locations. For example: Cactus, Roses, and Briar shrubs. Make sure you trim all shrubs and bushes to keep the opportunity for burglars to hide at a minimum.

·         Security lighting all around the house is one of the best ways to ward off would be burglars. Porch lights at each entry, flood Lights with motion or dusk to dawn sensors directly wired to your house or that run off of solar batteries keep your property lit and burglars out.

·         Install outdoor cameras and DVR recording equipment to be aware of what is going on at your house when you’re home or away. There is some great software that works with your surveillance system that lets you see your house on the internet live from anywhere you have an internet connection.

·         Never leave your spare key in obvious locations like under the doormat, above the door trim, under plants or rocks that are distinguishable for the others. The best practice is to leave the spare key with a trusted neighbor or friend.

·         Always lock you vehicle doors and don’t leave anything of value in your vehicle. It only takes seconds for burglars to gain entry, find what they want and move on. Locking valuables in your trunk is another option.

·         Make sure your house number is highly visible for emergency persons to see. For example display them in an unobstructed and visible location on your house, mail box or painted on the curb. All three locations are best if it is possible.

·         Install security system signs in yard. This is just another deterrent for would be burglars.

In summary, these instructions are in random order each is important to follow. There are many ways to maximize your safety and personal security. Though it’s never guaranteed; by implementing these proven instructions the risk for your house from being targeted by criminals is greatly reduced. Property Crime Prevention & Personal Safety Tips. Home Security Awareness Brings Peace of Mind

www.yourpersonalsecuritystore.com

Entry point crime prevention: Author Adam C Sisterhen

In this article I will be identifying entry points at your home burglars use and how to make them secure from easy entry.

 Window and door safety and security tips;

·         Burglars often watch houses to find routine schedules. For example if you leave windows open day or night, when you come and go and if the neighbors are observant. When leaving even on a short errands make sure to lock all windows and doors.

·         Screw on stops or steel rods are great ways to allow windows to remain open for ventilation and still keep security from entry possible. If you have an alarm system having 2 connections on each window, 1 at the close position and 1 about 6 inches up will give you security and ventilation as well.

·         To prevent burglars from smashing glass to gain entry all glass should be laminated in all exterior doors, sliding glass doors or windows. This will make the glass harder to break taking them time and hassle to enter. Remember burglars look for easy targets that are quick to get in and quick to get out.

·         Window coverings are great ways of keeping your belongings out of site. However not all window covering will be effective. For example translucent or sheer curtains look great but   burglars can still see through them. Opaque window coverings like drapes or blinds are most affective.

·         Exterior doors are not all equal when it comes to security for your home. All doors should be solid core or aluminum clad, should have dead bolts with long throws, wide angle peep holes, and if they have wood jambs they should have steel straps located at the strike area to help prevent forced entry. With today’s technology you can purchase doors with three lock mechanisms. These doors have a pin at the top and foot of the door in addition to the normal center lock. By pulling the leaver up it locks all three locations at once, making forced entry even more difficult to achieve.

·         Service doors from the garage to the house should follow the same criteria as exterior doors.

·         Sliding glass doors can be easy targets. Look for and implement these simple tips. Locking pins or screws to prevent doors from being lifted out,  metal rod or stopper to keep door from being forced open, and be sure the operating or sliding part of the door is on the inside of the non operating or stationary side to prevent it from being easily removed.

·         Garage doors with automatic openers may seem secure, however it isn’t always safe, always lock your garage door at night. Burglars can watch your house and when you use your opener the can get the code with simple electronic devices.

In summary, these instructions are in random order each is important to follow.  There are many ways to maximize your safety and personal security. Though it’s never guaranteed; by implementing these proven instructions the risk for your house from being targeted by criminals is greatly reduced. •          With life’s crazy schedules we don’t always find the time to get to know our neighbors. We need to be deliberate about meeting our neighbors and getting to know them. Your neighbors are one of the best security systems there is. If your all are on the same page, you can provide information to one another about unusual activities or strangers in the neighborhood. •    When away from home keeping your yard maintained is important, it gives the illusion of someone being home. Have friends or neighbors take care of it for you or hire a company you trust.
  •  Watch for strange cars or persons frequenting the neighborhood. Some burglars pose as sales people to find out if you have dogs, a security system, or anything that makes your house a difficult target or easy target. If you find a suspicious activity in your neighborhood report it to the local authorities.
  •  When away leave your contact phone numbers and locations with a neighbor or friend, stop newspaper delivery and have the post office hold your mail. You can always have a neighbor or friend perform the same tasks.

Property Crime Prevention & Personal Protection Tips. Maximize Your Safety & security in Your Home

www.yourpersonalsecuritystore.com

In this article I will be discussing best practices for securing property inside your home, using common sense and affordable products.

Property crime prevention inside the Home: Author Adam C Sisterhen

·         Installation of a security system is the single best asset for home property security. The loud sound of the alarm will scare off the burglar, and if monitored the security company will contact the local police department to respond. While at home or away your house is protected. Keep your exterior alarms turned on when home alone.

·         A home surveillance system can let you keep an eye on your home anywhere there is internet access.  The best systems are equipped with DVR’s. This can capture the image of the burglar to help police find them.

·         When away from home for extended periods of time you should install automatic timers that can be scheduled to go on and off throughout the day on TV’s, Radio’s, and lights in different rooms.  This will give the appearance of someone being at home.

·         A dog is not only a companion put also a form of security for your home. The bark of a dog makes your house less of a target; whether the dog is large or small the bark lets burglars know someone may be there and makes the burglar think twice.

·         All valuables and personal positions should be inventoried, etched with your driver’s license number, photographed, and detailed descriptions written down including make, model, and serial numbers on electronic components. Then store the records in a home safe and safety deposit box at your local bank. Be sure to make the appropriate updates to your list as needed.

·         Don’t store valuables in obvious places, use diversion safes. Store important documents in a safety deposit box.

·         Use door jammers on all inward opening doors at night to help prevent forced entry.

·         Keep emergency and non emergency telephone numbers posted by each phone and in your cell phone memory. When calling the local authorities always record the incident number to track the result of your call. If you’re calling from a location other than your home or from your cell phone be sure to state your location and the location you’re reporting.

In summary, these instructions are in random order each is important to follow.  There are many ways to maximize your safety and personal security. Though it’s never guaranteed; by implementing these proven instructions the risk for your house from being targeted by criminals is greatly reduced. Personal Security, TASERS, Personal Alarms, Key Chain Pepper Spray & Self Defense Tips for Women. www.yourpersonalsecuritystore.com

Woman self defense tips: Author: Adam C Sisterhen

Attackers look for people who seem unaware of their surroundings or who seem to lack confidence.   Attackers look for woman distracted by talking on cell phones, searching thru their purses, and other activities while walking because they are distracted and can be easily over powered.  Woman are attacked is the grocery store parking lot more than any place else. However office parking lots, parking garages, and public restrooms are locations attackers also seek victims, in high numbers. Most attackers will grab the woman and move them to a secure location where they won't be caught. Only 2% of attackers carry weapons, they usually use their own strength to overpower their victims. They look for woman without protection.

Best practices:

·    When walking from the office, your home, any parking area to your car be aware of your surroundings (be vigilant) and undistracted. Ask someone to escort you. It is smart to carry pepper spray, personal alarm, or a TASER. Have them in your hand and ready to go. It is a must to practice with your personal security device of choice so you know how to handle it.

·    Always look your attacker in the face; they are less likely to attack if they think you can identify them.

·    Men usually have greater upper body strength; while woman have lower body strength. Don’t be afraid to use it. Kick, Kick and Kick some more. A kick to the crotch might drop your attacker giving you time to escape.

·    When someone is coming towards you make yourself look as big as you can, hold your hands out, yell stop, tell them you have pepper spray or a TASER. (It is a good idea to actually have them.) ·    Don't be afraid to  make noise and fight back most attackers are looking for easy targets, not someone willing to make noise and put up a fight.

In summary; there are many ways to maximize your safety and personal security. Though it’s never guaranteed; by proper training, being vigilant, responding quickly with force, and using personal security products, you will have the upper hand. www.yourpersonalsecuritystore.comWoman’s self defense training: Author Adam C Sisterhen

Rule # 1:  Be vigilant (on the alert, watchful): being vigilant may not be easy to master, but once you do, it becomes as normal as breathing. By being vigilant you are able to identify problem situations, locations, and suspicious people. Now let me unpack that for you.

Time of day

·         According to the bureau of justice 53% of incidents of violent crime occurred during the day between 6a.m. and 6 p.m. and almost two-thirds of the rapes/sexual assaults occurred at night from 6 p.m. to 6a.m. From these statistics we learn that 24 hours a day offenders are prowling and at no time should you let down your vigilance.

Locations

·         The bureau of justice reports that the location of about a 25% of incidents of violent crime was at or near the victim's home, about half occurring within a mile from home and 76% within five miles. Only 4% of victims of violent crime reported that the crime took place more than fifty miles from their home. Everyday life keeps most people with in thirty-fives miles of their home; these statistics tie right into the top three places woman are attacked and abducted.

 ·         The number one place is your local grocer, number two is office parking garages and lots, and number three is public restrooms. Don’t get the impression that those are the only locations to be watchful, you need to be alert at all times wherever you are.

Problem situations

·         Problem situations occur anywhere and at any time do to your own actions. Identifying bad habits will help you avoid them. Pay attention to the list below.  The suggestions can make a difference.

·         Never walk alone: always walk in groups or with an escort to and from your office, car, restaurant, restroom, etc. Walking only makes you a target for an offender.

·         When parking your car don’t park near large vehicles like vans that obstruct your surrounding views.  Why? When you exit your car it is easy for an offender to pull you in and drive off without anybody noticing. Upon returning to your car if there is a large vehicle next to your take the appropriate precautions. For example walk down another isle so you can see clearly around your car before approaching it. At night try to park close to the entry door and under a light.

·         When walking from your office, home or parking area to your car always, have keys in hand, take a moment to look around before continuing for things out of the ordinary, and resist the temptation of talking on the phone or anything else that may distract you. Walk confidently to your car get in close and lock the door before you doing anything else.

Suspicious people

·         A suspicious person can be defined in two ways: the first is a person exhibiting questionable behavior; the second is a person in an area or doing something unusual or out of the norm. Suspicious behavior is something that doesn’t feel right; you may have a weird sensation or see something isn’t quite right, or out of place. A partial list of suspicious behavior follows:o   Individuals not dressed appropriately for the weather conditions. For example a long heavy coat when it’s hot outside.o   Individuals hiding their face, unwilling to make eye contact, turn away acting interested in a sign, when being approached they depart rapidly.o   Individuals in an area they don’t belong or carrying items that don’t fit what they are doing.o   Individuals hiding in shadows or behind objects so they won’t be identifiable.o   An unfamiliar individual loitering in an environment they shouldn’t be in. For example parking lots, buildings, schools and play grounds.

What you do if you see a suspicious person

·         Contact the police: When contacting the police for suspicious persons provide as much information as possible. For example; Location, what direction they were headed, car license, make, model and color,  ethnicity, physical description, age weight, height, hair color and length, eye color, clothing or any distinguishing marks.

In summary, this is not an exhaustive view of being vigilant. However I know this will help you gain the knowledge and ability to protect yourself. Though nothing is a guarantee, being vigilant is the first rule of self-protection. In future articles, additional rules will help you maximize your personal security and safety.
