Personal Security News

Latest News Flash:Please read about two way mirrors.

Due to the economic condition of our great United States the crime in all areas well grow exponentially! Through out history this has been proven. I don't know how long this economic down turn may last, however we should all be prepared. Don't take my word on this call your local authorites and ask them.

2-Way Mirror:

Can you tell whether that mirror in your hotel/motel room, restroom, etc. is really a mirror or 2-way glass? A police woman who travels all over the U.S. giving seminars and techniques for businesswomen passed this on.

When visiting toilets, bathrooms, hotel rooms, changing rooms, etc., how can you are certain that seemingly ordinary mirror, hanging there on the wall, is a real mirror, or is actually a 2-way mirror?

There have been many cases of people installing 2-way mirrors in female changing rooms. It is very difficult to positively identify the surface by just looking at it. So, how do we determine with any amount of certainty what type of mirror we are looking at?

Just conduct this simple Test:

Place the tip of your fingernail against the reflective surface, if a gap exists between your fingernail and the image of the nail, this is a genuine mirror; however if your fingernail directly touches the image of your nail, BEWARE, IT IS A 2-WAY MIRROR! "No Space, Leave the Place"

Remember, every time you see a Mirror, do the "fingernail test." It doesn't cost you anything.

Jury Duty Scam:

Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty, that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced.

The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo; your identity was just stolen.

The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including  Oklahoma ,  Illinois , and Colorado. This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system. The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

ATM Scam

A team of organized criminals are installing equipment on legitimate bank ATM's to steal both the ATM card number and the PIN. Please be aware when you use the ATM.  I have attached some pictures of one type of skimming device as an example of what to look for.

Scenario:

The team sits nearby in a car receiving the information transmitted wirelessly over weekends and evenings from equipment they install on the front of the ATM (see photos). If you see an attachment like this, do not use the ATM and report it immediately to the bank.

The equipment used to capture your ATM card number and PIN is cleverly disguised to look like normal ATM equipment. A "skimmer" is mounted to the front of the normal ATM card slot that reads the ATM card number and transmits it to the criminals sitting in a nearby car.

At the same time, a wireless camera is disguised to look like a leaflet holder and is mounted in a position to view ATM PIN entries.

The thieves copy the cards and use the PIN numbers to withdraw thousands from many accounts in a very short time directly from the bank ATM.
